Since I have been taking this watercolor class, I have been less than impressed with the results. At this point, I think I will leave the watercolor to the watercolorists because I apparently am not one! I have found that with some of my pen and inks, that I can color in the backgrounds. I am sometimes daunted by doing backgrounds because you can really screw up a piece by doing something bad to the background. But here is one of the pieces I have 'helped' with the watercolors: The browns in the car and the light blue in the car are inks.

This is what I am working on for next week.

Then sometimes, you just have to do something that you are familiar with, (ahhh... back to colored pencils and ink!) Just to prove to yourself that you can do it!

SO, this has been a major block in my artroom. A dumpster save that I thought I could do something with... Its just BIG, and there isn't room in there for it. What do you do with it? Gesso and paint it of course! I did it in a wine theme for the Art and Wine event coming up. Its 24x24 and so heavy it needs a cleat on the back for hanging... It took me a week, but I feel redeemed, like I actually should have paints in my possession.

This morning, as I wake up and drink my coffee, thinking of the two watercolors I have to have done for next weeks class, (I haven't been slacking, I just don't like what I have done yet.) and the other things I would like to do, like get online and get some of my work copied for the upcoming art sale I have signed up for, and get some stuff framed up, etc. (The frames have been in my living room for a month or more) I am reminded by the hockey goalie helmet that stands in my way. Although there is nothing I want to do more, than make a special kid I know happy by painting it up his way, my thoughts have to go with this project FIRST.

First of all, you have to please everyone. The right colors, the right design, and you need it by WHEN?

Second of all, to get a good adherence on something that will take some wear and abuse, you need enamel paint. I used to do signs, so I have some... but even when I did signs, I didn't have the warm place to do it for the winter. Those paints don't dry/cure well in the cold. They have an odor and are flammable. They need solvents with odors and are also flammable. Not something you want to have circulating in your house for weeks/months, and breathing. Needless to say, its an outdoor thing. In Michigan, without a warm place garage or something, that cuts out the cold winter months. Luckily, we have a break in our February with a weekend of 55-60 degree weather. It just might work!

Thirdly, enamels need days to dry and cure. Then to do it right, it should be clear coated, with a nice hard protective cover. I have a friend with a body shop that can clear it for me, if he has some extra clear in his gun someday. Again, then you have to give that time to cure.

Apparently there is a tournament we are hoping to have a nice cool hockey helmet for.... I seriously can't wait to see him in it!

I have signed up for the Annual Art Walk the first weekend in May. I am getting braver about selling, but its more out of necessity than actual wanting to. Looking for a business manager: Cheap. Someone that can put it all together and get it out of my art room and sell it so I can keep up my habit. lol. I have heard of people that have had to quit their day jobs to sell their art. There is so much to it! Taxes, and shipping, and festivals, and framing! When you work 40 hours a week, and still have chores to do at home, its almost impossible. Even to keep up a shop online! ( Maybe hire someone to do the housework so I can do the fun stuff??)

For some reason, I feel the need to head to the ReStore and get a flat hollow bedroom door. I want to paint it for a kids bedroom. Both sides. Don't ask me why... its just something I have been thinking about for a while and must DO.

There's always something! .... Stay tuned...
I wanted to try it. Watercolor is a whole different animal and I think I need to be more water and less pigment because I am painting like an acrylic artist, not the pretty watery colors that are watercolors. See for yourself:

Not to mention those little tubes of paint won't last long the way I am going. Oh well. Tomorrow night is critique and we'll see if they are as hard on me as I am on myself.

Happy Chinese New Year, by the way. Did you know its the year of the Rooster? I have done a couple of roosters, (see this blog for pics) for other people of course, but when I tried to do one for myself...

I got one pissed off chicken! I wanted to do one of those cool multi colored, free flowing birds, like what these artists did:

I didn't want to copy them, so I did them by memory. Granted its been MONTHS since I saw these, so I winged it. (no pun intended) lol... you would even think I might have been in a bad mood that day, eh? Nope.

So, a work-in-progress... or I will gesso it over.

The artist reception went well. We had a small but nice exhibition and crowd.
Well, stay tuned.
Should spend it on housecleaning, but that is just no fun at all.

A friend of mine has a new pup, for about a year now, and she is just sooo cute, I had to try to capture that face! Meet Charley:

Then, this old sap barn from a few years ago was still in my sketchbook... since it didn't do anything for me before, I played with it again today.... still not impressed. :/

And I had to do this today... don't know why but it had to be done....

I am not saying I am done with any of these, but trying to keep the creative juices going.

The Art Center in town has asked if I would like to join in and put one piece in their non-member exhibition until the end of February. I said sure. Since I didn't know what to put in, I let Hubs pick:

Last week my friend Ashley and I took a mandala class. For those of you that don't know what a mandala is, the word means CIRCLE, but its used as a spiritual focus, a meditation. In this class, we were given a blank canvas and were allowed to choose paint and where we wanted to go with it. The canvas had circles and one square. That canvas was pretty intimidating to say the least. Where to go, where to go???

It was explained that the middle was the core of us within the universe. We asked our angels to guide us. And seriously, I had no plan, but it came very easily. I felt good about it when I was done. I like it.

From my last couple posts, my friend gave the portrait of her hubby, father in law and son to her son for Christmas, and it was a hit! YEA!!

Other than that, I am just enjoying the season. I am helping Hubs construct some presents for next week, but will show those at a later date.

Happy holidays! Stay tuned!Linhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13839037387099062238noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4058764933124279280.post-70320032633449623772016-12-19T22:58:00.003-05:002016-12-19T22:58:48.287-05:00Monday December 19 2016The holidays are upon us, and like Santa's elves who have procrastinated a little too long, we are busy busy busy.

We have finished a project we started mid-fall. I think I told you about the keyboard? Well, here it is...

For being a recycled kind of project, and the keyboard was free, we paid about 70 for the beautiful walnut wood, about 16 for the recycled legs, 50 for the piece of glass, and then the incidentals: the base board, the bottom 'box' that hold the legs, the stain, the paint, the hardware... we can't just give it away.... and had a lot of interest until we named our price. **crickets**
Oh, well. We'll either sell it or not.

Then comes this pup...

done for a friend for her son for Christmas. The first was too dark, and really didn't look like her. So I did it on white and widened the face... And I am not sure it captures her personality yet, but she is going to take it. I told her I didn't want her to pay for something that didn't look like his dog, but the first was a 5x7 and the second one an 11x14, so the price went up which probably didn't thrill her. We should probably have discussed it first.

A friend asked me to paint a special picture for her son for Christmas. It is a picture of him as a child, with his dad and grandpa on a hunting day. I don't do portraits, but this lady is a very neat person, and to tell the truth, I wondered to myself if I was up to the challenge. I told her I would try it, with no commitments. She didn't have to take it if she didn't like it. Deal made.

She sent me the photo, that is turning yellow with age, and my daunting task was at hand. You know that craft show that is this weekend? And next week is college grad? Didn't seem to matter! Had that little creative imp in my head telling me, do it, do it, do it, like a friend at the bar wanting me to chug my beer. I couldn't wait to get done with the dinner dishes to get to it each night.

So the last few nights I worked on it. Tonight, as I was struggling with the faces, (because, you know, those will make or break it) that damn imp started with the 'What Ifs'. What if she doesn't like it? What if she is like that other lady that wanted you to paint her dog and then told you everything that was wrong with it? What if she says why did you do that that way? Seriously. This lady would throw it away before she would say any of that to me, but that damn imp didn't give a darn.

SO, I messaged her on facebook and asked if she would tell me whether to quit or keep going. Besides, it saves the face when she sees it in front of me. Its easier for her to make 'that' face when she first sees it on facebook. Easier for her. Easier on me.

Well, she just loved it. She's talking frames and how she can't wait to give it to him, and its so special. I went back in my art room and finished the faces just fine. It's done. The faces aren't perfect, but pretty close, I think. It's signed. It will dry for a few days and will get a clear coat.

I think I can show it here, because I doubt they will see it. I feel better about it now, and like I said, Challenge Done!

I have decided, (pretty much anyway) that I will take crafts and not art. This is not a really artsy community, although I did sell some art last year. So MAYBE! I dunno.

Remember my lion? I have decided that its a gift for a special someone, (who is also a Leo) and I have had it professionally framed:

I absolutely love how the moddled green mat brings out the yellow green of the eyes.

Then I continued to paint some of the cupboard doors that I have in the artroom, just to get them out of the way:

I have a couple more that are in the early stages in the artroom right now. But first, I have housework to attend to. Long overdue and needing to be done. Its at the point where it bothers me, so I know its time to put down the paint and glue and geterdun!

Stay tuned!Linhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13839037387099062238noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4058764933124279280.post-33955468869885064502016-11-06T20:37:00.001-05:002016-11-06T20:43:28.025-05:00Sunday November 6, 2016This week I am in the middle of many projects, so I will show pieces:

This table is in the HUBBY stages... I have designed it around the piano keyboard and we found legs at a resale shop and some beautiful walnut wood from the ReStore that will be used. This is just the bones. We have to work on it and get it done soon, the snow will soon fly!

I am getting into the community arts and crafts day again this year and
one of my goals is to use all the cupboard doors I have accumulated:

.

I am trying not to do all of them holiday style, though:
This is a Habitat for Humanity store, where you can take extra building supplies, to donate, or buy someone elses. They have all kinds of fun things for DIYers and people who have a little imagination... And money spent there, helps fund homes for people who need a roof over their heads. WIN-WIN!

I picked up a sturdy, but 'looks like it had seen better days' stool the other day when I went in there...

Wasn't looking for a stool, but it looked promising and needed some TLC. Didn't know what I was going to do with it, but, once home, found an old tote bag that had a hole in it, so I cut the emblem out of it, and recycled it ! I wondered what I kept that old torn tote for! Now I know!
Happy Halloween Eve!

This week I tried to do some inktobers to finish out the month. There is no way I did 31 this month, but I might have done 10!

This dog is a rescue, and has just been diagnosed and doesn't have a good future.

This weekend, I have found a 160 year old barn that I'd like to pen and ink and I have a bunch more that are on my to-do's. We'll see!
I just couldn't work an 8 hr day, come home to cook dinner and do an Inktober drawing every night. I wasn't getting anything else done! I have done a couple of inktobers however. And I promised a pic of Mr. Pirate Scarecrow.
I just painted the face.. the rest of the team dressed him.

For the last couple years, I have participated in "Blogtoberfest" on this very blog.As I was considering doing that again, I saw someone posted about Inktoberfest. Where you ink something every day in October.

Well. Theres a new challenge!

And there is so much I have stockpiled that I have been wanting to do...

Here is Day One thru Day Three. I will try to keep up with the blogging as well.

Last year, I think I blogged here that I painted an old oar that her hubby had with a fish as a gift for him for Christmas. I did, and he loved it. Here is what it looked like:

This year, she asked me if I could paint a window that came out of his childhood home, that would look like a bird on a branch outside of the window. A cardinal, please. Sure. I don't think its a gift, but a request. Something sentimental for the gentleman, please.

When I got it from her, there was a crack across the top pane and she said not to worry about that. Doesn't need to be painted. OK. So I did. Here is how it turned out...
Close up
I have heard some say that when a cardinal is near so are your loved ones from heaven.
I hope this hangs in their home for many years to come.
This was such a nice weekend! I took Friday off and we went to Art Prize in Grand Rapids MI. Artists from all over display works of art that are 2D, 3D, Video, etc. Although there is no way you could do the whole thing, it was evident that there weren't as many entries as past years, and there were less "WOW's". The public votes on the displays and the winner in each category wins big money. In fact there might be a 2nd and 3rd in each category also. My very favorite painting was not even in the competition, but was displayed in a foyer:
This week:

I fell in love with this painting by Frank Giovingo so I bought a print from him.
I found ten of these kid sized old metal folding chairs at the ReStore. Can you figure out what I am going to do with them with the one I have base coated? Next post!
Here is a keyboard of an old piano that a friends Dad found in a house he is refurbishing. He was just going to throw it away, but you know me...
I was supposed to be in a small, close-to-the-art-festival-but-not-quite yesterday. It poured. I cancelled in the morning when I heard that we were possibly getting thundershowers. I feel bad, but on the other hand, I don't have a whole lot that can get wet, and I wasn't the only one that cancelled.

Remember last year when we had the Bonsai display? It was today. I started a piece, and the due date snuck up on me and I didn't get it finished. I just didn't get it done in time. But I went to the Artist Reception today anyway.

I am not a cold weather person, so the end of summer usually bums me right out, but today is 92 smouldering degrees with 90 % humidity. Its been a very hot, very uncomfortable summer, even for me. The thermostat being turned down a little would be welcomed.

I just threw this together thinking it was going somewhere, but I think my mind was on vacay already. We're back now and enjoyed the time away! Spent time with our son the college student. Good for the soul!
I tried to tell The Hubs that when you see creativity that you like you should buy it. Doesn't matter that this bottle has dry red wine in it and I like sweet. The bottle is awesome. Its creative. Besides, I have to have wine for my friends who like the dry stuff in the house. Dontcha think? And that bottle is brilliant!

While on vacation, I walked up these stairs at just the right time of day. I had to take a pic of the shadowplay. How cool is that?
Well, thats about it for now. I should be displaying at an art festival soon, and I want to go to Art Prize, although changing plans and in the middle of the thicket at the moment.

Stay tuned!

I was able to pick up my last framed piece. I happened to pick mat board that wasn't in stock so it took a couple weeks to get it done:
I like it for the most part, but nothing shows how much your lines are off like a nice square edge...

Hopefully next week I can show more. Until then, Stay Tuned!Linhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13839037387099062238noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4058764933124279280.post-74475552429605049942016-08-14T22:19:00.002-04:002016-08-14T22:19:45.234-04:00Sunday August 14th 2016Well, the chairity chair has changed a bit... But, that is the end of my weekend, artistically speaking. I did do laundry and toilets, cooking and cleaning, a quick winery stop, some shopping, and breakfast with family, dinner with friends... but artistically, this is all I could squeeze in this weekend.
Our son was home, I have both grand puppies, I ate well, went to dinner with friends, breakfast with family, have not one, not two but three bouquets of flowers, and I got to go to my happy place: Hobby Lobby!
I did get another colored pencil drawing matted and framed this weekend, picked it up today:

I also picked up a set of Inktense pencils. Can't wait to try those!
Otherwise this week: I sold another print of the Boat
So I told you about the Alzheimer's fundraiser that we have every year at work... I always donate a piece of art.
This year I was trying to do a celebrity portrait that probably had copyright issues, anyway, but after three failed attempts, I gave up. This was on Sat. night and had to have it framed and turned in on Monday morning. So I did what I had to do: Framed up an older painting PRINT, (not even an original) and submitted it Monday morning. It is not particularly even one of my favorites, but a lot of people have liked it.

All donations for this particular fundraiser were set up in the huge entry in our workplace on Monday and tickets go on sale on Friday morning for a Friday afternoon drawing.

Here is the reason for my special edition post today.

Our CEO, CFO and (I believe) COO all came in from Corporate for a Town Hall meeting. When the CEO entered the building, he asked about all the donations. It was explained about the fundraiser, and out of the 38 or 39 lots of prizes he was drawn to my painting and said something about, "we have creative people like that here"?

In the meeting, surrounded by my peers, he asked who the painter was, and made some very nice comments to me about my painting. He loved it. I guess it got quite a stir, because I got comments the rest of the day, and people from Corporate even wanted pics of it.

Today I smiled a lot. I love painting and being artistic. I do it for what it does for me. But when someone else makes a fuss about it? That's just icing on the cake! I hope it goes to someone that loves it. I heard that there was money left for tickets for Friday before they left for Corporate.

It was just an awesome feeling! Going to ride that wave for awhile.

Here was my submission:
This is where I was set up. However most of the plein aire artists did landscapes, I did a zoomed in shot of it. I didn't win the competition, but proud that I got out of my comfort zone and doing something different. Got good comments and lots of kudos.

I also took my sketch books to the craft store to get some matted and framed. I ended up doing the hydrangeas on black and the thistle I did on black. They are awesome, and so much fun to play with mat colors and frames. Just matting and framing them up made me feel so much like a real artist. They look really good, and really fun to do, but this is not cheap to do.

I have the two poinsettias that will be next, but with a future paycheck.

For the Alzheimer's auction, I threw away the idea for the celebrity portrait, and framed up one of my other prints that everyone seems to like:

So, I need to get my house in order, as it has been left behind while my head has had visions of artwork dancing around in it. Need to do something else for a bit.

Then, onto the rest of my list. Stay tuned!Linhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13839037387099062238noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4058764933124279280.post-10103214156874198582016-07-31T22:55:00.000-04:002016-07-31T22:55:39.255-04:00Tuesday July 26 2016I sit here when I have a bunch of art I have to do. Denial? Would I rather work at the deadlines? Probably. Life isn't giving me large chunks of time. I just have these little times that I can't get painty. Or its too hot. (it HAS been hot! thats a good excuse) Or I just am not coming up with the drive and ambition.

Instead, I am redoing a charity piece over and over again. Its a portrait of a celebrity which is probably against a copyright law anyway. Guess I will give it up and just figure the universe is keeping me out of some kind of trouble.

There is another Plein Aire event coming up last week of July that I kinda said I would.
The Alzheimers piece for the charity auction.
A desk for a teacher friend of mine.
A chair for the Chair-ity Auction.
A unicorn? for a friend.

Stay tuned. Much more to come!Linhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13839037387099062238noreply@blogger.com0
